News from the East

I would like to inform all of you that our Ides of March Spaghetti Dinner was a great success. Thanks to all of you that came down and enjoyed another great dinner that was prepared by our Junior Past Master Doug Roswold. Thanks to all of you that showed up to set up and help prepare the Lodge for this great event. We had a large turnout, and a lot of the brethren sold extra tickets to help make this a great event. Thank you brothers! And a very special thank you to all of the brothers who gave a donation to the Lodge - every penny counts! I also want to thank all the Jobs Daughters, DeMolay and Eastern Star members who came out and helped serve dinner.

I attended the Job's Daughters meeting on March 6th, 1999 where they honored the Master Masons and Eastern Star. It made me very proud to be the Master of a Lodge that sponsors such a fine group young ladies. The Job's ceremony and program for the day was very nice. The lunch and socializing that followed the meeting was also a pleasure. We should all be proud of these young ladies, and remember that the youth in these organizations today will be the leaders of tomorrow.

Brethren, we have a very busy schedule planned for the months ahead. Please take notice of the calendar and be present at our Lodge events. Some of the degree dates that were published last month have changed, and there may still be other changes to come. Don't hesitate to call me, or any officer of the Lodge, if you have a question about a degree date.

This year the Grand Lodge Annual Communication will start on April 15th at the Downtown Saint Paul Radison. All Master Masons are welcome to attend.

Please remember all of the charities that Masons support as they need our help (Minnesota Cancer Research, Minnesota Masonic Home and the Shrine Hospital for Crippled Children just to name a few.) They all do a lot of good!

Yours in the Light,
Dave Sibben, Master

News from the South

My name is John Fosdick. I have been active in the Masons for five years and have been the Junior Warden for the past three months.

I am writing to report on the Sweetheart Dinner that was held at Jacob’s 101 Restaurant on February 27th. We started out with appetizers and followed that with very good selections from the menu. Even though the turnout was small the party went on without a hitch and we all enjoyed each others company.

Next I would like to report that on March first we had scheduled a First Degree, but changed it to a full practice due to a lack of candidates. Although the other degrees in this series have also been canceled, a new set of degree dates will soon be announced.

Arcana will be hosting a First Degree Lodge of Instruction for our District on Saturday, April 10th, starting at 9:00 AM (8:30 for coffee and a roll.) All members are welcome to come and learn the secrets to putting on a world class Entered Apprentice Degree. The officers of the Lodge and degree team members are all expected to be present.

Fraternally yours,
John Fosdick, Junior Warden

Less Light in Masonry

From Transactions of the Texas Lodge of Research

I now present you with the working tools of the Pessimist and Chronic Objector, which are the Hammer and the Monkey Wrench, and are thus explained:

The Hammer is an instrument used by operative mechanics to drive nails, adjust timbers and other useful purposes in constructing an edifice; but we as Pessimists and Chronic Objectors are taught to use it to undermine our fellow men, and to nullify and destroy their work especially if they are doing something better than we can do it.

The Monkey Wrench is an instrument used by operative mechanics to assemble machinery and tighten bolts that there may be no breakdown of the work; but we as Pessimists and Chronic Objectors are taught to use it for the more ignoble and inglorious purpose of casting it into the machinery of the Lodge, and to gum up the works.

Arcana Lodge Outstanding Mason of the Month

Curtis Johnson

Arcana Lodge is proud to acknowledge the outstanding Mason of the month for April, Curtis Johnson. He became a Mason at Shekinah Lodge in 1976, and transferred to N.E. Lodge in 1982. Subsequently he went through the line and was the Master in 1987 and is presently the secretary. He is a Shriner, a member of the Scottish Rite, and a fine example of a Mason. He is a volunteer at his church, the Red Cross, Teamster Retirees, the Scottish Rite, and Masonic organizations. His presence at the N.E. Lodge and Arcana Lodge functions is made even more visible at the now memorable Arcana Coffee Club with his profound opening prayer.

At long last we have them!

At long last we have them! And in sufficient quantity so that you can have this for your very own.

Please cut yours out and save it. Put it in a safe place. Try not to lose it. Or better yet, keep a few spares on hand.

These TUITs have been hard to come by, especially the round ones. But now by special arrangement, you can have yours.

Now that these are available, most of our problems about attendance and getting things done at the Lodge will be solved. We look for attendance at Lodge meetings and the coffee club to double now that everyone has his round TUIT.

For you see, so many have said, "I'll get back to Lodge attendance just as soon as I can get a round TUIT." Others have said, "I should go to the coffee club but I never seem to get a round TUIT." Or, "I know that my Masonic knowledge would increase if I went to the Lodge, but I never get a round TUIT."

Well, now that is all past! Everyone can have his own round TUIT. If you meet a member who never gets a round TUIT, give him one. Keep a good supply on hand.

Great things are in store for us!
